About

Federica is an Associate Professor at the University of Delaware in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and in the Biden School of Public Policy and Administration and a Resident Faculty in the Data Science Institute.

She works on data-driven solutions to problems that span from the nature of explosions in the sky to delays in the justice system. She studies lightcurves, time series of light, in astronomy to understand stellar evolution and cosmology, and in the urban environment at the Urban Observatory, where the study of urban lightcurves enables sociological, ecologic, economic inference.

She is Deputy Project Scientist for Rubin Observatory, the largest ground-based optical astrophysical facility ever built which in 2025 will start a 10-year survey of the southern hemisphere sky destined to deliver the largest database of astrophysical object and phenomena to date, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. She is TED 2019 fellow. Watch her 2019 TED talk!

She is a passionate communicator: contact her regarding public spaking engagements.

When not sciencing, she likes fighting.

My CV is available here.

LSST

I am the LSST Science Collaborations Coordinator: in this role I facilitate the work of the international science community in preparing for the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope revolutionary survey, which will take a movie of the entire southern hemisphere sky every three nights down to 24th magnitude depth, delivering tens of Tb of data per night! I am also the co-chair, together with Rachel Street, of the LSST Transients and Variable Stars Collaboration: a group of over 200 scientists who are preparing to optimally use the LSST survey for transient science, and to assure that the survey design is suitable to support the study of the transient sky. Below are some podcasts, videos, blogposts, and articles about my boxing, and my double life as a scientist and a professional fighter. For more info follow me on IG and like my Facebook athlete's page.
